Variety is the Spice of LifeLife’s like a cup of coffee: sweet, bitter, spiced, warm, cold, energizing, thrilling and eclectic. When I was 18 years old, I realized this beautiful simile to describe life. You know life’s a funny thing , we experience so much everyday and strive to be the best, to really feel significant. We also go through phases, so many phases. And we change, for better or for worse. For example, sometimes we love a hot caramel macchiato and other times we love an iced cold brew with a splash of coconut milk and sprinkle of cinnamon. It just depends on the moment, but the beautiful piece to these phases is that when we live out these phases and seek variety, we create new connections. It’s story time, my friend! Let me enlighten you about this whirlwind of life, over a cup of coffee.
Connections Transform Your Experience Here On Earth
Coffee beans clang together, and the strong scent fills the air. I’m lying in my warm bed, my eyes open. It’s the first day of fifth grade. I don’t understand why mommy enjoys the taste of coffee every morning; it’s so strong. I go into her room, and there she is at her vanity, putting on her make-up. I run to her bed and jump all around on it as she applies her blush and eye shadow. Her bright pink lipstick is my favorite color because it highlights her beautiful smile, to me it paints a picture of happiness. She rushes out the door for work, I wonder why we are we always rushing. I remember this all too well as she kissed me goodbye.
At eighteen years old, I continue to hear the Starbucks Kenya coffee beans grind together as their hard shells collide in a repetitive motion. Each individual bean turns to a soft powder as the hot, steaming water filters through, like the timely, whirlwind of life we are thrown into. My eyelids lay heavily over my eyes as the sound of the grinding beans subconsciously awakens me from a deep rest. I greet my mom in the kitchen, and we both fix a cup of coffee to our liking: first pouring the coffee in, then adding cream and sugar, and finally swirling the coffee. We have five minutes together to slow down and reflect before we must embark on a long day. For my mom, that day consists of distracting children from medical procedures and empowering each child to remain positive through the power of play. I watch as my mom intricately puts on her make-up, which helps to finalize a face of joy before she heads out to catch the train. The comfort of my mom’s bed, the warmth of the coffee, and the sound of my mom’s voice prepares me for each and every day. Waking up bright and early, as many of us know, can be a challenge. Each morning we should remind ourselves to slow down and enjoy life over a cup of coffee.Lately, I spend my days by lighting up my passions. Coffee is one passion of mine. First of all, the ground beans smell AMAZING. Honestly, too good. This might be weird but it actually takes my breath away. I also love discovering new coffee shops. I have vowed that whenever I visit a new destination, I will take a trip to a local coffee shop. You meet the kindest people who are relaxing and enjoying life for the moment. It’s inspiring! You also can try different coffee drinks which is always a plus. The passion my mom has taught me throughout my life, has impacted me as an individual. As a little girl, I constantly admired my mom’s positive energy and her generosity in helping others. During freshman year I was a quiet and timid girl, then I began to evolve into the committed human-being I am today. Sophomore year, I decided to join the cross-country team. I now realize that this twist in fate has molded me as an individual. Through running, I have gained mental toughness to accomplish any goal I set my mind to. I have come to learn that each day in life is a small challenge or sometimes a big one; we wake up, we get ready and we attack. Pushing my comfort zone is something that has always endeared me because it’s interesting to analyze our potential abilities. As we add challenges to our lives, we grow through the experiences. It’s similar to adding cream or milk to coffee; the dark brown coffee and the off-white cream infuse to a light brown.
It’s Up to You to See the Beauty in Everyday Things
Waking up bright and early, as many of us know, can be a challenge. Each morning, we should remind ourselves to slow down and enjoy life over a cup of coffee. Embrace the phases of life, because they generate valuable connections.
